In 1920s Mr Chawnes lived in the first house. He was Church Warden at one time. In the third house lived Tommy Cox. His housekeeper was Miss Lavender, the last of a family of bootmakers, who had traded in Spondon for a number of years. She used to wear an old cloak and bonnet: a very bad tempered old woman, who hated children, so got teased badly. Tommy Cox had a Barber's Shop in one room of the Old School at the top of Church Hill.
