COXON OF SPONDON,DERBYSHIRE, ENGLAND
Peter COXON was born around 1712 possibly in Elvaston, Derbyshire. On the 7 September 1742 he married Sarah LANE at St Michaels’ Church in Derby, Peter is given as blacksmith of Spondon, Derbyshire.
There was a family of COXON blacksmith’s at Elvaston Castle at the right time period for Peter’s birth but further investigation is needed here. Peter and Sarah had two sons and two daughters of which their second child Peter appears to be the only one with issue. This Peter, also a blacksmith married Mary MARSTON in 1768 in Wymeswold, Leicestershire. They had nine children, four sons and five daughters.

Peter COXON born 1772. Married Sarah THEOBALD. They had three sons, four daughters. Peter followed his father as village blacksmith and this continued through the family until the 1930s.
Mary COXON born 1773. Married Joseph ASHBY. Four sons, three daughters
John COXON born 1776. Married Martha ASHBY. Four sons, three daughters. John became a blacksmith in the nearby village of Alvaston

Sarah COXON born 1780. Married William SPENCER. Nothing more is known
Miriam COXON born 1783. Married John POTTER. Three sons, two daughters
James COXON born 1785. Married Anne ORME. Five sons, one daughter. Shopkeeper of Longford, Derbyshire
Ann COXON born 1788. Married John HOLBROOK. Two sons, two daughters
Thomas COXON born 1778 was educated at Repton School in Derbyshire. A family story is that as he had lost a thumb through an accident, and would be unable to work as a blacksmith it was arranged for him to go to Repton by the local landowner, Mr Drury-Lowe. In 1802 Thomas was granted authority to perform the office of School Master in the Free School of Spondon. Thomas has gone down in Spondon history as "Schooly Coxon". He married Anne HOLLAND in 1805 and they had eleven children, three sons and eight daughters.

Miriam COXON born 1817. Married 1st John Thomas DALE. Nothing more known. Married 2nd ? EVANS. Nothing more known
Elizabeth COXON born 1819. Married Edward KING. Nothing more known

Peter COXON born 1821 was also educated at Repton School. In 1848 he began work as the parish clerk to the Southwell Minster, in Southwell, Nottinghamshire, a job he had for the next 56 years. In 1850 he married Jane HARDY, daughter of Joseph HARDY and Ellen nee HILLMAN, both of Southwell. They had 13 children, eight sons and five daughters;

Jane COXON born 1863. Died unmarried 1916. Teacher
Thomas COXON born 1865. Married Myra Allwood SAVAGE. One son, three daughters
Anne COXON born 1867. Died unmarried 1939. Midwife
Charles COXON born 1869. Married Clara Annie LEWIN. One son, three daughters. Saddler. Moved to Spondon, Derbyshire c1895.
Arthur COXON born 1871. Died 1882 aged 11 years
Lucy COXON born 1872. Married John Churchill CARTWRIGHT (cousin). No issue.
Walter COXON born 1874. Married Emma LEE. Two daughters
I am in contact with many descendants of Peter COXON, blacksmith of Spondon and operate an e-mail newsletter to advise on any new findings, members etc. In October 2002 my husband Barry and I attended a COXON family reunion in Spondon. Unfortunately it coincided with one of the worst storms of the decade and many people who wanted to attend were unable to. We hope to have another reunion in the future.
