Derby Evening Telegraph 21 March 1947 p.1 and 24 March 1947 p.1 reports the north pier as having sunk 3 feet into the river bed. The road was restricted to single line traffic and a maximum vehicle weight of 25 tons imposed. A few days later work began on cutting the bridge in two to save the undamaged part.
